|What is nasopharyngeal carcinoma treatment?|
Treatment options and recommendations depend on several factors, including the type and stage of cancer, possible side effects, and the patient’s preferences and overall health. The main treatment for nasopharyngeal carcinoma is radiation therapy but usually it given in combination of chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Other than that, curing the cancer is the primary goal of treatment, preserving the function of the nearby organs and tissues is also very important. There are several treatments for nasopharyngeal carcinoma:
- Radiation therapy
Radiation therapy is the use of high energy x-rays or other particles to destroy cancer cells. The popular radiation therapy used to treat NPC is called external-beam radiation therapy which is radiation from a machine aim outside the body at the tumor. External radiation therapy have two methods that are intensity-modulated radiation therapy (allows more effective doses of radiation therapy to be delivered while reducing the damage to healthy cells and causing fewer side effects) and proton therapy (used proton rather than x-ray to destroy cancer cell).
Chemotherapy is the use of drugs to destroy cancer cells and stop cancer cell the ability to grow and divide. Systematic chemotherapy is delivered through the bloodstream to reach cancer cells throughout the body. Another ways to give chemotherapy include and intravenous (IV) tube placed into a vein using a needle, in a pill or capsule that is swallowed (orally), or by injection into a muscle, under the skin, or directly into the cancerous tumor.
Usually the combination of radiotherapy and chemotherapy is used to treat nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Side effects of chemotherapy may include fatigue, nausea, vomiting, hair loss, dry mouth, diarrhea and or constipation and loss of appetite.
The aim of surgery is the removal of the tumor and surrounding tissue during an operation. If the cancer has spread to the lymph nodes, surgical removal of lymph nodes in the neck may be recommended. This type of surgery called a neck dissection. Other than that, in the specific instance of undifferentiated carcinoma of the nasopharyngeal, neck dissection is occasionally needed. The side affect of neck dissection may cause numbness of the ear, weakness when raising the arm above the head, and weakness of the lower lip. But this side affect will go away after a few months.
